As far back as I can remember, I have loved styling hair. My mama has a picture of me at a year old, running around with a brush in my hand. I used to sit on the back of the couch, with my back to the wall, and thought I was getting a treat when my mama let me play in her hair (little did I know she was the one getting a treat). At 11 years old, my mom decided she had enough of going to the salon to get her hair pressed. She said I was smart enough to learn and she was going to teach me. Little did I know that "practice on your doll first" meant without heat, as I watched the synthetic hair melt into the comb.
After we ironed out a few glitches, I was on my way to my dream. In high school I told my father I wanted to own a salon. He told me I was too smart to "do hair," so I went in search of a more fulfilling, smarter person job. After 25 years of searching, starting and stopping cosmetology school twice, and being a kitchen beautician/braider, I am back at square one. I WANT TO DO HAIR!
I found out in November 2012 that my company was closing our center in Tustin, CA, and we would have to find another job. I knew I had time, but that time came and went quickly. In January 2016, I was advised I would be getting a pink slip in March. Any rational person would have been stressed out, but I was excited at the prospect of following through with my dream. A masters degree in management and $75,000 later, and I'm back at square one. I WANT TO DO HAIR!
My mama had been asking me for years to take the Sisterlocks class so I could do her hair. She even offered to pay for the class. I was busy and did not want to take on any new projects. As a single mom raising three kids, I had enough on my plate. When my company made its move, I made my move, and took mama up on her offer. While taking the Sisterlocks class I realized that I had just found my new passion. The intricacy, the precision, and the flexibility of the locks intrigued me. I am looking forward to breaking new grounds and celebrating my clients' successes.
Waiting for You,
